Before You Begin
MagSheathing™ MGO boards are designed to be easy to work with using standard construction tools. Read these guidelines before starting your installation to ensure the best results.
Cutting
Score & Snap
For straight cuts, score the panel deeply with a carbide-tipped utility knife (2–3 passes), then snap along the score line — just like drywall. This is the fastest method for straightforward cuts.
Power Saw Cutting
Use a circular saw, table saw, or jigsaw with a carbide-tipped blade for precise or curved cuts. Cut outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Wear a dust mask — MGO dust is non-toxic but you should always protect your lungs from construction dust.
Hole Cutting
Use a hole saw or jigsaw for electrical boxes, pipes, and penetrations. Drill bit works for pilot holes.
Fastening
Screws (Recommended)
Use corrosion-resistant screws (galvanized or stainless steel). For walls: 1-5/8" coarse-thread drywall screws at 8" O.C. along edges and 12" O.C. in the field. For thicker boards (16mm+), use longer 2" or 2-1/2" screws.
Nails
Ring-shank galvanized nails may also be used. Pre-drilling near panel edges (within 1" of edge) is recommended to prevent cracking, particularly on thinner boards.
Edge & Corner Details
Leave a 1/8" gap between panels and at all perimeter edges to allow for thermal movement. Do not over-drive fasteners. Use metal corner bead or appropriate trim at exposed edges.
Jointing & Finishing
Taping Joints
For interior applications, tape joints with fibreglass mesh tape and apply a setting-type joint compound or a polymer-modified thin-set. Do not use standard drywall compound (it is not moisture-resistant).
Priming & Painting
Apply a quality alkali-resistant primer before painting. MagSheathing™ accepts all standard paints, including latex and oil-based formulations. Two coats of finish paint are recommended.
Tile & Stone
For tile or stone applications, use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar. The MGO surface provides excellent adhesion. Ensure joints between panels are filled and flattened before tiling.
Stucco & Plaster
Apply a fibreglass mesh over the face of the boards and use a polymer-modified base coat. MagSheathing™ is an excellent substrate for direct-applied stucco and EIFS systems.
